CBG vs. CBD: Differences and Benefits

CBG vs. CBD: Differences and Benefits

4 minute read

CBD is undeniably one of the most in demand cannabinoids found in the hemp plant for its multitude of benefits. However, did you know that other cannabinoids such as CBG have been shown to provide powerful benefits, and especially when coupled with CBD? So, let’s explore the differences and benefits of CBG vs. CBD and why High Potency CBD + CBG Hemp Infusions offer surprisingly enhanced benefits and elevated effects.

What is CBG?

CBG stands for cannabigerol and is categorized as a minor cannabinoid, although, there is certainly nothing minor about its benefits and effects. In fact, CBG is also often referred to as ‘ The Mother of Cannabinoids’ because in its acidic form, CBGA, it plays a pivotal role in the synthesis of other cannabinoids.

Without CBGA there would not be CBD or THC. It operates like a master acidic precursor, or simply put; CBGA is the source of other acidic precursors like CBDA, THCA, CBCA that, with exposure to the environmental elements like UV (Ultraviolet) light, heat and oxygen are triggered to biosynthesize into CBD, THC and CBC. This is why CBG is lovingly thought of as  ‘the mother’ or stem cell of cannabinoids.

CBG is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid like CBD and has many similar benefits.

What Are The Main Differences and Benefits of CBG VS CBD?

The main differences of CBG and CBD have to do with how each cannabinoid functions in the body. That is why, for instance, CBD suppresses hunger and CBG stimulates appetite. This difference in function has to do with CBG interacting directly with the CB1 and CB2 receptors of the endocannabinoid system (ECS) to provide benefits while CBD interacts indirectly with the ECS influencing molecules and other systems.

Simply, that means that even though both CBD and CBG provide the benefits of stress release, pain relief, mood elevation, neuroprotection, inflammatory response, sleep promotion and more, the mechanism of action in the body is different thereby activating some of the same benefits throughout the body and mind in a different way.

Key areas of research indicates that CBG provides potential benefits in the following ways:

  • Help with feelings of anxiety, stress and feelings of depression due to balancing and boosting anandamide levels. Anandamide is an endocannabinoid (neurotransmitter) that binds with the receptors in the brain and throughout the body and stimulates feelings of happiness and well-being, and is often referred to as ‘the bliss molecule’.
  • CBG shows potential for reducing overall pain due to the direct interaction with the receptors. It also shows promise for possibly being more effective for pain management than THC, yet without the ‘high!’

CBD also provides most of the same benefits, although the mechanism is by indirect influence of the receptors and other processes. This indicates that the potential for increased benefits and targeted effects is greater with the presence of both CBD and CBG.
