Make your own CBD or CBG Infused Hemp Oil

Make your own CBD or CBG Infused Hemp Oil

4 minute read

Creating your own CBD or CBG infused hemp oil can be a fun and rewarding DIY project. CBD Hemp oil is a type of oil that is made from the flowers of the hemp plant, (which is a low THC variety of the cannabis plant). Unlike other types of cannabis oils, hemp flowers only contain 0.3% THC. The finished oil will have some THC, but not enough to produce strong psychoactive effects. High CBD or CBG hemp flower oil is extremely beneficial. It is primarily used to improve sleep, pain, focus, mood, anxiety and a host of other health improvements. It's easy to make and is a great way to boost health and wellness.

Here are the steps to infuse your own hemp flower oil:

  1. Start by purchasing high-quality, organic hemp flowers from a reputable source.  Always try to support your local hemp farm. To find hemp farms in your area, contact your state’s Department of Agriculture. If you can’t source from a local farm, there are many organic hemp farms that sell their products online. To ensure their product is actually organic, you can check if their farm is listed on the Organic certifying agencies' website.  The most common types of hemp are high in CBD, but there are also high CBG hemp varieties. High CBG hemp is more rare, but can be found. A good source is Organic Green Roots Hemp Farm. Here you can select Certified Organic, High CBG hemp flowers that contain 16% CBG.

  2. Once you’ve selected your hemp types, it’s time to bake them, aka decarboxylation. Decarboxylation is an essential step that activates the cannabinoids in the plant, making them more bioavailable when ingested. Raw hemp flowers are naturally high in the cannabinoid CBDa, but to activate the CBDa into CBD, you need to heat the flowers. (If you prefer a high CBDa hemp oil, you can skip the decarboxylation step).

  3. To decarb (activate) the CBD, preheat your oven to 220-240 degrees Fahrenheit and spread your hemp flowers evenly on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake for 30-40 minutes, stirring occasionally until the flowers are dry and crumbly.

  4. Once your flowers are decarboxylated, it's time to infuse them into the oil. You can use any type of oil for this, but some popular options include coconut oil, olive oil, and avocado oil. Heat the oil in a double boiler or a slow cooker set to low heat. Add the decarboxylated hemp flowers to the oil and let them infuse for 4-6 hours, stirring occasionally.

  5. After the infusion time is up, strain the oil through a fine-mesh sieve or cheesecloth to remove the plant material. You can also use a coffee filter for an extra-fine strain.

Your infused hemp flower oil is now ready to use! Store it in a cool, dark place and use it as you would any other type of oil. You can use it to make your own edibles, topicals, or other hemp-infused products. You can also add directly to an empty dropper bottle and use it as a tincture.

If you’d like to know the exact potency of your oil, research local testing labs in your area and submit a few ml of oil to be tested. This way you can know the exact dosage of CBD and other cannabinoids per ml.A good way to predict the potency of your oil is to know the percentage of CBD and THC within the flowers. You can obtain this information by requesting the lab report from the hemp supplier. Once you have this information, you can use it to figure out a rough potency.

For example, if the hemp flower potency is 10% CBD that means each gram of hemp flower has approximately 100mg CBD. If you buy 10 grams of flower, you will have 1000mg CBD. If you add 10 grams of flower to 1 ounce of oil, you should get close to 1000mg CBD per ounce of oil. This is an example of how to roughly estimate potency. Oil infusion may not extract the full amount of CBD in the flower, but it gives you an idea of potency. It's likely your potency may be slightly lower than the math shows.

Infusing your own hemp flower oil is a simple and satisfying process that allows you to create your own custom, medicinal products. Just remember to start with high-quality hemp flowers and be patient as the infusion process takes time. Enjoy your homemade hemp flower oil and all the benefits it has to offer!
